California’s Solar Property Tax Benefit Is Scheduled to End
Under current law, installing a qualifying solar system generally does not increase your property’s assessed value for property tax purposes.* In simple terms, you can go solar without adding the value of the qualifying solar equipment to your property tax assessment. For years, this has provided an additional financial benefit for California property owners.
However, this benefit is going away on January 1, 2027.
What does this mean for you?
Solar installations that qualify for the exclusion before the deadline can continue to receive the benefit until the property changes ownership. But after January 1, the exclusion will no longer apply for new qualifying solar projects unless the law is changed or extended. This means those considering solar should not assume the same property tax benefits will still apply in 2027.
This change is just another reminder that benefits available today may not be available tomorrow. To start saving money now, let us evaluate your options while this is still available.
