California’s Solar Property Tax Benefit Is Scheduled to End

Under current law, installing a qualifying solar system generally does not increase your property's assessed value for property tax purposes.* In simple terms, you can go solar without adding the value of the qualifying solar equipment to your property tax assessment. For years, this has provided an additional financial benefit for California property owners. However, this benefit is going away on January 1, 2027. What does this mean for you? Solar installations that qualify for the exclusion before the deadline can continue to receive the benefit until the property changes ownership. But after January 1, the exclusion will no longer apply for new qualifying solar projects unless the [...]

Solar vs. the Stock Market

Which Will You Choose? Jim has been thinking about his financial future. He pays around $4,200 annually to PG&E for electricity. That’s an average of $350 per month, like clockwork, with no return and nothing to show for it in the long term. Then, Jim learns that switching to solar could cut his PG&E bill down to $700 a year. This would save him about $3,500 annually. While the average solar system costs around $35,000, the 30% federal solar tax credit—available only through the end of this year—reduces the net price to just $24,500. So Jim starts wondering… Is a solar system a [...]

PG&E to Customers: “Pay More So We Profit More”

Yes, it’s true: more rate hikes are coming for PG&E customers—and this time, they’re not even trying to hide the fact that it’s solely to increase profits for shareholders. The utility company is asking for yet another rate increase in their recurring three-year update from the California Public Utilities Commission. It specifically cites boosting investor profits as the rationale for the increase, despite reporting record profits for two years in a row—$2.47 billion in 2024, on top of the $86 million that is already earmarked for shareholder dividends. So what does this mean for customers like you? In short: higher bills, fewer answers, and [...]

Record-Breaking Heat Leads to Bank-Breaking PG&E Bills

With record-breaking temperatures and wildfire smoke all over California this summer, people have been turning up their air conditioning for protection… when they’re not experiencing power outages, that is. Meanwhile, PG&E continued to make outrageous price hikes, causing many to wonder why they have to pay for a service that they can’t even rely on.  Does this sound familiar? One PG&E customer reported this trend in their electric bill over the last three years: PG&E Customer’s Yearly Bill Increase July 2022 $330 July 2023 $447 July 2024 $789   Has this been true of your bill? With the increasing frequency of wildfires and heat [...]
